The Nordic Capital School Games started in 1948 in Stockholm. Teacher Holger Westman introduced the idea to the politicians in the city of Stockholm. Copenhagen and Oslo were positive and participated in the very first games. The three cities took turns in arranging the games the following years. Head leaders during the first few years were the Mayors of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo.

In 1952, Helsinki decided to participate for the first time. Two years later, in 1954, Helsinki arranged the games for the first time.

In September 2005, a delegation of Nordic head leaders visited the city of Reykjavik, in order to invite them to the games. In 2006 Reykjavik sent its first squad to Helsinki. Reykjavik arranged their first games in 2011. Since then, all five cities fully participate in the Nordic Capitals´ School Games.
